  • New online short film produced by local filmaker Jeremy Monroe has been recently released about re-establishing wood habitat in streams

Jeremy and his crew hope this new film can help shine more light on why these projects are important, and I invite you to help us share this in your networks and circles (the Vimeo video is easily embeddable in websites, blogs, social media using the 'share' button):

Filmed as part of our forthcoming film, Willamette Futures, Water and Wood illustrates the powerful forces at work restoring the ecological values and functions of Oregon's Rivers. This project took place on the McKenzie River in the Willamette National Forest, and provides critical habitat for aquatic species like Spring Chinook Salmon, Steelhead, lamprey, and many other aquatic critters. See more shorts like this at willamettefutures.org

  • New Video on Biochar (Solid bi-product from the breakdown of organic matter under high heat and low oxygen)

Perry Morrow, a Master's student in the Water Resources Science department has created a new short film on biochar. Her research is focusing on biochar, both finding the saturated hydraulic conductivity and determining whether biochar reduces toluene and xylene concentrations in water.

  • Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Blooms (CHABs) (Institute For Water and Watersheds , February 2013)

IWW researcher Tullia Upton, a Ph.D. Student Environmental Sciences, and intern Courtney Berman have recently published a new report on cyanobacterial harmful algae blooms (CHABs).  The report covers the timeline of outbreaks statewide, the effects of CHABs in Oregon, a who’s who in the CHABs Scene, strategies for minimizing occurrence of CHABs in Oregon, and future management of CHABs in Oregon.  For a full archive of affected regions and counties, please visit the Harmful Algae Blooms website maintained by Oregon Department of Health.

  • The Sockeye’s Secret Compass (The New York Times)

Every summer, millions of sockeye salmon flood into the Fraser River in British Columbia, clogging its shivering waters with their brilliant blushing bodies.  Now, research from Oregon State University provides the first evidence that sockeye are guided home after two years at sea by a memory of the magnetic landscape of the river. The results of the study appear in the latest issue of Current Biology.

Nathan Putman, a postdoctoral researcher at Oregon State and the lead author on the study, took advantage of 56 years of fishery data and the unique geography of the coastline of British Columbia to show that sockeye recognize what home should look like, at least, magnetically speaking.
