WATER COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS
- The IWW Collaboratory will be getting a new Lachat instrument soon!
This new Lachat was proposed by OSU Engineering faculty members Kathy Motter and Jeff Hatten to purchase for the IWW Collaboratory as part of a RERF (submitted back in 2012). The RERF was awarded and they have met with the Lachat sales representative to design the instrument. They decided to settle on a 5 channel instrument. 2 channels will be dedicated to in-line digests of filtered waters (one channel for N and the other for P), which should really increase throughput of those analyses. This instrument will have several manifolds/methods to use on the other three channels to do nitrate, ammonium, silica, and orthophosphate in water and nitrate, ammonium, and orthophosphate in soil extracts. Of course this instrument is very versatile and can be set up to do a bunch of other analyses, but it will arrive with the methods/manifolds to do the most common analyses right off the bat. Once the instrument arrives there will be an opportunity to train a few students on the instrument while the technician is here. If you would like to know when that training will occur, please contact Jeff Hatten at firstname.lastname@example.org . We hope all interested students can utilize this innovative new instrument frequently!
- Congratulations to WRS doctoral student Mousa Diabat who presented his research in 3 minutes at Scholars Insight!
Congratulations to Mousa Diabat for showcasing his talents and his WRS research for the broader OSU community by presenting his research in 3 minutes at the Scholars Insight event! Provost Randhawa and the OSU Graduate School hosted the first University-wide “Scholars’ Insight” event, a graduate student competition to communicate impact on April 3, 2013 in LaSells Stewart Center. OSU Graduate students had the opportunity to present a three minute "impact" of their scholarly works, to a non-specialist audience at OSU and the Corvallis community. Mousa is advised by Dr. Roy Haggerty, and is a stalwart participant at WRGP and Hydrophiles events.
You can view his 3 minute presentation at the link below:
- Congratulations to Ricardo González-Pinzón on his new job offer!
Please join us in congratulating Ricardo González-Pinzón. Ricardo will be accepting an offer from the University of New Mexico, Dept. of Civil Engineering, for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position, starting in August, 2013.
Ricardo has done a great job in his 4 years as a PhD student in CEOAS and the Water Resources Graduate Program. Ricardo is advised by Dr. Roy Haggerty and has worked in Dr. Haggerty’s research lab for the past few years to complete his PhD work. Coming in with a very strong MS degree from the Universidad Nacional de Colombia, he has made important advances in our use of resazurin and other tracers in understanding stream hydrology and stream ecosystems. Thanks to everyone who has supported Ricardo in his PhD work!
Ricardo will be defending his dissertation on May 31 (8 am, probably in Kidder 202 and webcast to those who would like to watch it elsewhere).
- · Systematic Evidence Based Review Workshop — Evidence Based Review Workshop for Forestry: Introduction & practical guidance on systematic reviews
May 7–9, Richardson Hall 107
The workshop will explore guidance from a variety of fields that utilize an evidence-based approach, and will relate this to issues of high priority for natural resources regionally. It is designed for participants with no previous experience of systematic review, but who want to learn how a formalized evidence-based approach to resource management might improve their work. It will also be an opportunity to begin discussions on how a “Collaboration for Natural Resources,” modeled on those in other disciplines, might be developed. Collaboration would involve partner organizations and individuals with shared interest in using the best evidence to support policy–and decision-making for resources and people. OSU Institute of Natural resource’s own Dr. Lisa Gaines will be a presenter at this workshop!
Workshop Instructor: Dr. Gillian Petrokofsky, Associate Researcher, University of Oxford

- · Call for Hydrophiles Officer Nominations!
Nominations are now being accepted for the 2013-2014 Hydrophiles Officer Elections! Please nominate students and/or yourself for officer positions (President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, and Webmaster) by 5pm Friday, April 12, 2013.
This is a great opportunity for students to gain leadership experience, give back to the hydro-community, and to build their resume! As per OSU student organization requirements, nominees must be full-time students for the 2013-2014 academic year. Students, faculty, post-docs, faculty research assistants are all welcome to nominate students. Students can be nominated (and run for) multiple officer positions. If you have questions about the officer roles and responsibilities, please email questions to email@example.com or ask one of the current officers in person.
Please submit nominations to firstname.lastname@example.org, and include: 1. Nominee’s full name, 2. Nominee’s home department, and 3. Hydrophiles leadership position sought by nominee.
Nominees will be notified by April 14th and then will have two weeks to accept or decline the nomination(s) and prepare a candidate statement. Elections will be held at the 2013 Spring Hydrophiles BBQ at the end of spring term.
