  • ·         Water Research Symposium -- Registration Deadline May 1

Please remember to register for the 3rd Annual Water Research Symposium which will be held on May 13 at the CH2M HILL Alumni Center at OSU. The deadline is fast approaching, don’t miss out! Registration is required for the free lunch and reception by 5pm, Wednesday, May 1, 2013.

Also a new event was recently added to the Symposium schedule: a panel discussion on getting into graduate school to study water.  The panel is geared towards undergraduates or others in the community considering graduate school in the future (whether than be in two years or many years down the road).  Current graduate students from different disciplines (all related to water) and multiple Oregon universities will offer insights from their experiences and answer questions about searching for and applying to the right program and then transitioning into life as a graduate student.  More information is highlighted below and available in the attached flier.

Lunchtime Panel on Pursuing or Starting Graduate School

Considering applying to graduate school to study water?

Have questions on the application process, what life is like for a graduate student, or whether to go for a Masters or PhD?

Come to the lunchtime panel at the Symposium to hear from and pose questions to current graduate students studying water from various disciplines, degree programs and universities about their experiences.

We are looking forward to seeing you on May 13th!

  • ·         Institute of Natural Resources (INR) Spring Newsletter has arrived!

The annual INR Spring Newsletter was recently completed and the periodic e-newsletter is off to a fresh start with a new format and our interns at the helm. In addition to some updates about INR, the newsletter will have feature stories on Oregon University System faculty members, large interdisciplinary research projects, and/or information about state or regional natural resource initiatives. In addition to the other work they do with us, our INR graduate student policy research and information management interns – Zach Bolick, Luca De Stefanis, Andrew Wentworth, and Mika Yasuo – were instrumental in putting this newsletter together and writing our feature stories.

The full newsletter is below or you can link to it at:

  • ·          IWW Director Todd Jarvis Recently Participated in the Southern Africa Development Council Workshop and Regional Consultation on Groundwater Governance (International Association of Hydrogeologists Newsletter, U.S. Chapter: April 2013 Vol. 42, No.1)

Southern Africa Development Council Workshop:

The Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) Secretariat, in concert with the UNESCO Office in Nairobi, convened a Workshop on Promoting Cooperation and Conflict Prevention in Transboundary Water Resources.  The event was hosted at the Phakalane Golf Estate Hotel Resort from 25-27 February 2013 in Gaborone, Botswana.   IAH Member, Todd Jarvis from the Institute for Water and Watersheds at Oregon State University, provided training to twenty-four water professionals from Botswana, DRC, Malawi, Mauritius, Namibia, Swaziland, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

The main objectives of the workshop were to increase capacity of high-level water decision makers on water conflict management and cooperation; share and exchange on SADC sub-region experiences on water cooperation; establish a sub-regional platform on water conflict management and cooperation; and learn more about designing and conducting a negotiation process.

Regional Consultation on Groundwater Governance:

UNESCO, together with FAO, World Bank, IAH and UNECE, organized a Regional Consultation on Groundwater Governance celebrating World Water Day 2013 and the framework of the UN International Year of Water Cooperation at The Hague (NL) from 19–21 March 2013.

The agenda and professional roundtable can be viewed at this link: http://www.hydrology.nl/ihpevents/385-benchmark-meeting-on-groundwater-governance-marks-road-to-world-water-day-and-un-international-year-of-water-cooperation.html

A summary of the total membership revealed a continued rise in members to over 4,000 worldwide. Mentoring the next generation of groundwater professionals was discussed at length.  Increased efforts to embed the IAH "brand" on related mentoring opportunities, as well as hydrophilanthropic activities such as Hydrogeologists Without Borders, were emphasized.
