WATER COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS
- 3rd Annual OSU Student Water Research Symposium put on by the Hydrophiles and the Water Resources Graduate Program - May 13th
Does your research involve water? Are you interested in getting feedback on your research, from a research proposal to data analysis? Would you like practice presenting research at a conference? If so, submit an abstract at the Water Research Symposium! The Symposium will be held at OSU's CH2MHill Alumni Center on Monday, May 13th.
The Water Research Symposium is unique in that it is a multi-disciplinary venue for student presentations on ALL research that is water-related (from economics to anthropology to engineering to GIS--and everything between). It is also a unique opportunity for students to showcase their research, receive feedback, and hone their presentation skills. Students at ALL stages of their research (i.e., proposal, ongoing, and completed) are welcome to submit an abstract. A presentation or proposal is a great way to get feedback on a research proposal. Students from ALL universities in Oregon are invited to participate. The Symposium is also a great opportunity to meet and talk with potential employers as well as students and faculty outside of your department or from other universities.
To register to attend and/or to participate in the poster session or give a presentation, please go to http://groups.oregonstate.edu/hydro/2013-osu-water-research-symposium.
Registration deadline is May 1st.
Everyone interested in water resources should attend, whether you want to present your work or come to listen to fellow students. Everyone attending and/or participating should register. This is an interdisciplinary event and we are looking for participants to represent every water-related academic field. (And, yes, there will be FREE FOOD!) We hope to see you there!
- First OSU Biological and Ecological Engineering Photo Contest
Now that the Spring term is in full swing, we thought we would send out a little reminder about our photo contest. This contest is open to everyone! The more entries the better. Please feel free to pass this information on. We are very excited to see what photos everyone can come up with! Rules for the contest are posted on the BEE Website, as well (http://bee.oregonstate.edu/2013-photo-contest) Submit all entries to Jennifer.Cohen@oregonstate.edu.

- Great news from the Three Waters Project
Jason (South Store Co-Op Manager) just reported that the City of Corvallis approved the removal of two parking spaces at the South Co-op. This means that the Project can go ahead and design the raingarden and then submit it to the City for a plumbing permit. WRGP student Perry Morrow has been assisting with the Three Waters Project for the past year.
WHAT THIS MEANS –a design team is needed to quickly whip up a raingarden design that will:
1.) Adequately handle the rooftop runoff
2.) Provide an acceptable overflow mechanism to the existing stormdrain
3.) Provide exceptional aesthetic and ecological value to the Co-op property
4.) Provide and educational and cultural experience for the Co-op community and those passing by the property.
The Project has a minimum of 5 or 6 people on the team with extensive experience in raingarden design. While they especially need the help of those experienced members, team leader Dave Eckert believes the raingarden project would benefit by having anyone with an interest in participating in this design phase.
If you are interested and have any time between this Sunday through Friday to participate in this process, please contact David Eckert at firstname.lastname@example.org ASAP and let me know your availability. I will work around everyone’s schedule who is interested.
- OSU Engineers Without Borders Presents: “Kel Wer” Documentary Film Premier
KEL WER means “to bring song” in Dholuo, the native language of Lela, Kenya. In July 2012, residents of Lela partnered with the Oregon State University student chapter of Engineers Without Borders USA to bring their community greater access to safe drinking water.
This film documents the students’ journey to bring water (and song) to a community of resourceful, resilient and friendly people in desperate need.
Doors will open to the public at 6:30 p.m., a photography exhibit of the people of Lela will be available for viewing in the lobby, and the 35-minute documentary will start at 7:15 p.m. Following the screening, members of Oregon State's chapter of Engineers Without Borders will share their personal experiences and answer questions.
Seating is limited and available on a first-come basis.
