Water Community Announcements
- Save the Date for this Hydrophiles Event!
Lower Deschutes River field trip and float planned for October 12-13. The trip will include a tour of the selective water withdrawal facility on the Round Butte Dam and a brief presentation of the planning/modeling that went into designing the system on the 12th and a short float trip on the Deschutes River near Maupin on the 13th. Contact Jordan Beamer (firstname.lastname@example.org) if interested.
- OWEB's Board will consider input received during the Listening Sessions as it develops its Long-Term Investment Strategy.
- Institute for Natural Resources (INR) and the Oregon State University Libraries (OSUL) posted Oregon Explorer Map Viewer Tutorials on YouTube.
Oregon Explorer Map Viewer is a GIS based platform developed by INR and OSUL that allows researchers to look at large quantities of continually updated and integrated natural resource data from state and federal agencies, local governments, university scientists, and citizens.
- DataONE Video Contest: Management and Sharing Environmental and Ecological Data
This DataONE Video Contest will consist of short videos related to management and sharing of environmental/ecological data. Topics might include open data, data sharing, organizing data, integrating disparate data sets, backing up data, creating metadata, citing data. The contest began accepting submissions on 15 July 2012 and will end in September. The top 3 videos to be selected by a panel of experts, with cash prizes awarded! Here is an example video: The 7-Toed Terrestrial Dolphin, Bored to Death by Data management.
On a related note:
IWW will have new user-friendly camera, computer and editing software for students and faculty to make their own short educational videos by September 1. The equipment will be available for anyone interested in producing a water related educational video on campus.
OSU Water in the News
- Congratulations to Theo Dreher, Oregon State University, and Jennifer Graham, U.S. Geological Survey for their top-ranked proposal recommended for funding through the NIWR/USGS National Competitive Grant Program:
"Biological Drivers of Freshwater Cyanobacterial Harmful Algal Bloom Extremes Assessed via Next-Generation DNA Sequencing Technology;" Theo Dreher, Oregon State University, and Jennifer Graham, U.S. Geological Survey; $243,835 federal; 3 years; Institute for Water and Water Sheds, Oregon State University.
- EarthFix Conversations: High-Speed Research On Climate Change
"Peer-reviewed research into a connection between that event and climate change took less than a year to publish for the Texas drought and heat wave of 2011.
Mote’s paper concluded global warming is 20 times more likely to be the cause of last year’s prolonged heat wave in Texas than it could have been in the 1960s, when less greenhouse gases had been released into the atmosphere." Link to the full interview.

This hire will target individuals who work at the interface between the land-surface and groundwater systems and add complementary skills in one or more targeted areas: integrated modeling; near-surface geophysics; watershed to landscape scale hydrological observation and analysis; paleohydrology; remote sensing; and the application of geochemical and isotopic tracers. We especially are interested in candidates who will develop approaches for scaling observations from point to basin levels and provide new insights into hydrological changes associated with landscape disturbance and (paleo) climate change. Successful candidates will become part of a large, interdisciplinary research initiative and have access to state-of-the-art instrumentation within the newly established Facility for Imaging the Near- and Sub-surface Environment (FINSE) and Surface and Sub-surface Hydrology Lab (SSHL). To apply, send a CV, statement of research interests, and contact information of three references to Rick Matlock (email@example.com).
