WATER COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS
- Register now for the 4th Annual Water Research Symposium!
The Water Research Symposium is a one-day conference highlighting outstanding student research in the fields of water resources science, engineering, and policy. All oral and poster presentations are by current graduate and undergraduate students at schools in Oregon, Washington, or Idaho conducting water-related research. The conference is structured for connecting individuals, building skills, and sharing knowledge between students, university faculty, staff, and professionals working in water resources. The symposium will be held on Monday, May 12th at the CH2M HILL Alumni Center in Corvallis, Oregon. There will also be an optional student mixer on Sunday, May 11th and opportunities to stay with graduate student hosts for free.
To register, submit an abstract, and learn more about the symposium, please visit our website: http://groups.oregonstate.edu/hydro/2014-water-research-symposium-oregon-state-university
The DROUGHT-R&SPI Summer School will cover the major drought management-related issues and will introduce the premises for improving drought preparedness through increased knowledge and improved science-policy interfacing. The five-day Summer School will cover three topics: (i) drought hazard characterization and forecasting, (ii) drought impact assessment, and (iii) drought management. The course will mainly consist of lectures and assignment workshops. Applications are due Thursday, February 27.
- Water Security for Policy Makers and Practitioners Short Course
Bringing together key strengths in water politics, climate change, agricultural water management and water allocation, this course will provide participants with an exceptional chance to acquire an understanding of this key global issue. This course will be held at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK from 19th to 23rd May 2014 for a fee of £1600 (including bed and breakfast accommodation). For full details, including the course brochure, please see: www.uea.ac.uk/international-development/dev-co/professional-training/water-security-for-policy-makers-short-course-2014. For interested parties, feel free to contact Dr. Todd Jarvis, who has participated in other short courses at UEA.
- Climate Change and Development Short Course
The purpose of this short course is to equip non-specialists with a broad understanding of what climate change may mean for low-income populations. It will examine the scope and prospects for adapting to change and contributing to emissions reduction in the context of development issues and poverty reduction. This course will be held at the University of East Anglia, Norwich, UK from 3rd to 12th September 2014 for a fee of £3000* (including self-catering accommodation). *Register before 30th May 2014 for a reduced fee of £2800. For full details, including the course brochure, please see: www.uea.ac.uk/international-development/dev-co/professional-training/climate-change-and-development. For interested parties, feel free to contact Dr. Todd Jarvis, who has participated in other short courses at UEA.
- Spring Term Course: FOR 563 Environmental Policy and Law Interactions
FOR 563 focuses on the relationship between federal and state regulatory environmental laws generally, and the federal Clean Water Act specifically. Wetlands protection, and laws governing agricultural and forest practices will be examined as examples of regulatory frameworks for achieving resource protection in Oregon and nationally. This course is for natural resource oriented students from all disciplines who will have professional careers that will intersect any number of environmental regulatory or natural resource protection laws. For more information, see attached flyer.
- Southern Willamette Valley Groundwater Management Area
The SWV Groundwater Management Area Committee meeting will be held this Thursday, February 27 from 8:00 – 10:00am at The Old Harrisburg City Hall (354 Smith Street). Topics will include: groundwater contamination issues (including nitrate), public water service to Pioneer Village Estates (north of Coburg), water quality and drawdown tests for new domestic wells, a current lysimeter project, a focus group attended by SWV Growers, and notes from a meeting on February 25 about a nitrate and pesticide testing program. For more information, see attached meeting agenda.
