WATER COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • CEOAS, Engineering, Agriculture, and Forestry have provided funds for a data server to provide LIDAR data (for Oregon) for anyone at OSU to access!  There are ~25 TB of data currently available.

If your first question is "What is LIDAR?"

See:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_t6TUYjfPYo

Or the Magic School Bus has you covered:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TNZ6efHI5qE

The high resolution and accuracy of LIDAR data has applications in just about anything ranging from:

Terrain modeling, Hazard Analysis, Flood Mapping, Geomorphologic studies, Forest Biomass, Building location and heights, Asset Management, Archaeology, Meteorology, Biology and Ecology, Civil Engineering and Construction and a whole lot more

This data was obtained from DOGAMI who leads the Oregon LIDAR Consortium, http://www.oregongeology.org/sub/projects/olc/, which should be acknowledged in any publications resulting from use of the data.

The attached document provides more information on the acquisition of the data, types of data (e.g. point clouds, DEMs, etc.), future plans, and instructions on how to access the data.  The hopes are that as more people use the data, we can pool funds to develop a user-interface and easier access to the data. So please note that while you can access the data freely, continued use will require pooled funds to obtain new data and keep the servers running.

  • Sixth International Workshop on Hydro-Hegemony
The International Workshop took place January 12-13, 2013, at UEA in London. Over 100 researchers, practitioners and activists including OSU Water Resources Graduate Student Morgan Crowell participated in the event and explored its theme: Transboundary Water Justice. With discussions enduring 10 hours each day – and then well into the night – we think a small step has been made towards investigating the merit of ‘justice' to serve transboundary water interaction, in both theory and practice.
All of the proceedings, videos, photos, etc. are now available at the HH6 Event Webpage.

OSU WATER IN THE NEWS

  • IWW Director Todd Jarvis appointed member of the Oregon State Board of Geologists Examiners (OSBGE) (Oregon Geologist Examiner)

IWW Director Todd Jarvis hit the ground running in his new role as a Governor Kitzhaber-appointed member of the Oregon State Board of Geologists Examiners (OSBGE). He has broached the subject of expanding the pool of licensees to include geographers in this provocative editorial in the OSBGE Newsletter.

http://www.oregon.gov/osbge/pdfs/Geologist_Examiner_Summer2012.pdf

His most recent editorial focused on professional ethics and built upon the concept of Stealth Issue Advocacy in the geosciences as developed by OSU Professor Robert Lackey.

http://www.oregon.gov/osbge/pdfs/Newsletters/GeologistExaminer_Winter2013.pdf

He will be presenting the importance of professional licensing to the GEO 407 class, From Student to Professional, on Febuary 8, 2013 during lunch in Room 193 in Burt Hall. Contact David Dickson David.Dickson@oregonstate.edu to reserve your fair share of American Dream Pizza!
