WATER COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Benton SWCD New District Manager Annoucement!

Benton Soil and Water Conservation District is happy to announce that our new District Manager, Holly Crosson, started here at Benton SWCD on January 7th. Holly is an aquatic ecologist, botanist, and educator with more than 20 years of experience in natural resource planning and management, sustainable agricultural practice, and community engagement and outreach related to conservation and stewardship on public and private lands.  Holly is looking forward to working with the Board of Directors and all of the District's dedicated partners to ensure healthy watersheds and a strong natural resources legacy in Benton County for everyone to benefit from and enjoy for years to come.

  • Want to get some practice speaking in front of water professionals? Want to expand your professional network in Oregon water?

Then consider speaking at Water Works School for this year.  This year’s schedule is Tuesday, June 18 through Thursday, June 20 at the Clackamas Community College.  Grad students looking to polish their presentation skills are cordially invited, if they have any interesting topics or papers on a subject that fits with the school.

Todd Jarvis is a regular speaker on the History, Science and Geography of Water Witching and regularly had 150 attendees at his lectures.

OSU WATER IN THE NEWS

  • The International Center for Integrated Water Resources Management (ICIWaRM) Partners Review Progress and Look to the Future (UNESCO News and Events)

The International Center for Integrated Water Resources Management (ICIWaRM), under the auspices of UNESCO, held a meeting of its partners on December 4, 2012. The partners reviewed the center’s accomplishments from 2009 through 2012. They then each shared a summary of their specific activities related to ICIWaRM and UNESCO.

ICIWaRM activities centered around continuing education, research and institutional capacity building in focal areas that include arid/semi-arid zones, droughts and floods, water and environment, integrated water resources management, global and climate change, and mathematical modeling.

The partners discussed the road ahead, including how IHP-VIII will impact focus, and broke into smaller groups for more detailed discussions on implementation specific themes and projects. ICIWaRM is an international water resources technical center at IWR and is the only UNESCO International Hydrological Programme Category 2 water center in the United States.

  • OSU students and faculty honored in 4th Annual Symposium on Columbia River Governance (Columbia River Governance website)

Presentations and handouts, as well as the Summary Report, from the 4th Annual Symposium on Columbia River Governance are now posted online. OSU IWW faculty members Lynette Da Silva and Aaron Wolf served on the the Steering Committee for the 4th Annual Symposium. The Summary Report does not identify who said what, but captures the essence of all of the comments and questions raised during each of the panel sessions and roundtable discussions of the Symposium. A huge thank you goes out to all the students who took notes!

“Voices of the Basin” is a short film created by Oregon State University students - Holley duMond, Kim Ogren, Jacob Peterson-Perlman, and Julie Watson.

  • Governor Kitzhaber's State of the State Speech and the Oregon Business Plan Water Initiative (Oregon Business Plan website)

The Oregon Business Plan is calling for a new focus on the productivity of water.  Improving water productivity means obtaining more value from each drop of water—whether used by farmers, communities, business or ecosystems.

Michael Campana at the Institute for Water and Watersheds at OSU participated in the 2008 Statewide Roundtable discussions regarding the state’s water resource issues.  Oregon is making some progress in raising awareness of water issues since the 2008 Statewide Roundtable discussions, and the Oregon Integrated Water Resources Strategy which was undertaken by state government in 2009.  The challenges are complex and will require a perspective that takes into account a long term planning and implementation horizon.  This Initiative has been launched to maintain this perspective and build dialogue and partnerships for solutions.
