WATER COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • New Certificate Program

At its December meeting, the OUS Provost’s Council approved OSU’s proposal to offer a Graduate Certificate in College and University Teaching. The certificate program will be effective Fall 2012.

This 18-credit hour graduate certificate is designed to provide advanced coursework and experiential learning opportunities to current OSU graduate students who plan to pursue careers in teaching and instruction in higher education settings or who plan to pursue careers that require similar skill sets in facilitation. While seeking their respective degrees, OSU graduate students can now earn a credential that certifies their teaching and facilitation skills and thus confers advantage in competitive hiring environments. This certificate program is an important investment in the quality of undergraduate instruction at OSU as well as in the future of the teaching professoriate. Congratulations to all who developed and reviewed this proposal.

For more information, contact Dr. Brenda McComb, Dean of the Graduate School at brenda.mccomb@oregonstate.edu.
  • Reminder: Winter Term 2013 Water Resources Seminar; Advances in Water Resources Engineering
Everyone is encouraged to join us for at least 3 of these seminars even if you are not registered for the course, as a way of staying connected with one another and stimulating your mind! Wednesday Janurary 16th will present the second seminar of the series with a presentation entitled: "SLICES: an information framework for research, monitoring and evaluation in the Willamette River floodplain" by David Hulse, University of Oregon: Department of Landscape Architecture. Hope to see you all there!

OSU WATER IN THE NEWS

  • Plum Creek commits $500,000 for OSU water-quality research (OSU News & Research Communications)

Plum Creek, one of the nation’s largest private land owners with about 6.4 million acres in 19 states, has committed $500,000 to support an endowed research position in the College of Forestry at Oregon State University.

The endowed fund will support in perpetuity the Plum Creek Postdoctoral Fellow in Forest Watershed Science, a position to study the impacts of active forest management on water quality and aquatic systems. Recruiting for the position will begin immediately. This expanded partnership with Plum Creek means OSU will have a permanent research position to help create opportunities for improving watershed health.  The commitment is part of The Campaign for OSU, the university’s first comprehensive fundraising campaign. To date, donors have provided more than $887.9 million toward the campaign’s $1 billion goal.

About the OSU Foundation: The Oregon State University Foundation is the nonprofit corporation chartered to raise and administer private gifts in support of OSU education, research and outreach. The foundation retains assets of $563 million and manages the majority of OSU’s composite endowment, valued at $412 million. The foundation launched the university’s first comprehensive fundraising campaign in 2004, with donors contributing more than $800 million toward its $1 billion goal to date.
