OSU WATER IN THE NEWS
- Solar-Activated Stormwater Cleanup: Oregon BEST grant speeds testing of innovative technology (Oregon BEST e-News Update)
Imagine lily-pad like devices that can be floated on ditches or retention ponds along highways and parking lots to pre-treat stormwater using only the power of the sun. A Beaverton start-up has created a floating "lily pad" that uses solar-activated nanotechnology to break down water contaminants.
Puralytics CEO Mark Owen said the device could treat storm water pollution before it reaches nearby waterways if it were deployed in retention ponds or ditches alongside roads and parking lots.
A $53,000 Commercialization Grant from Oregon BEST is enabling Beaverton, Ore.-based Puralytics to work with faculty and students affiliated with Oregon State University's Institute for Water & Watersheds to evaluate the company's new solar-activated water treatment system. The technology could reduce overflow situations at municipal treatment facilities during heavy storms.
The OSU research team, led by Oregon BEST researcher Todd Jarvis, will establish key design parameters and generate third-party test data using artificial ponds or tanks, where prototypes will be monitored and tested.
