  •  Annual Hydrophiles Spring BBQ this week!

Hello Water Community,

It's time for the final Hydrophiles event of the year, the annual spring BBQ! The BBQ is a great way to relax a bit as the year comes to a close, enjoy great company, food, and homebrew! Also, remember that the officer elections for the upcoming year will be held at the BBQ (please note that only dues paying members can vote in the election but all can come and enjoy the BBQ). Here are the details:

When: Thursday June 6th, 6pm-9pm

Where: Thompson Shelter at Avery Park

Who: Anyone who has an interest in water and loves great food and great company!

Check out officer candidate statements here: http://groups.oregonstate.edu/hydro/2013-2014-officer-candidates

Friends and family are invited as well.  Remember to bring your own reusable plate and silverware and please consider bringing a dessert or side dish to share.  Hydrophiles will provide the burgers, hot dogs, veggie burgers, fixings, and beverages.

See you next week!

  •  Updates from the 3rd Annual Water Research Symposium held on May 13th

A few updates:

We had over 100 attendees from 5 universities and over a dozen organizations.

We had 44 student presenters, with prizes awarded to the top oral and poster presenters. Click here to see the winners!

Copies of many of the oral and poster presentation materials can be seen here.

Photos from the Symposium can be seen here.

We hope to continue the tradition of highlighting outstanding student research in water resources. If you or your organization is interested in working with Hydrophiles to plan next year's event, please reply to this email and let us know! We would love to partner with other universities or organizations.

Notes for presenters:

If you would like your presentation or poster linked on our website but have not yet sent it to us, feel free to email it as a .pdf to: waterresearchsymposium@gmail.com and we will get it posted.

Here is information on picking up your judging feedback if you have not already done so:

For non-OSU students: Please complete this survey (http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2YSF7DM). Select the option to have your feedback sent to you and provide an address to which you would like your feedback sent and we will get it to you as soon as possible!

For OSU students: If you would like to pick up your feedback on campus, Jennifer Cohen has it available for pickup in 116 Gilmore Hall between 8am-12pm and 1pm-5pm. Otherwise, please complete this survey (http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/2YSF7DM) and leave an address which you would like to have it sent to.

Thanks again, and we hope to see you next year for the 4th Annual Water Research Symposium!

  •  Solar-Activated Stormwater Cleanup: Oregon BEST grant speeds testing of innovative technology (Oregon BEST e-News Update)

Imagine lily-pad like devices that can be floated on ditches or retention ponds along highways and parking lots to pre-treat stormwater using only the power of the sun.  A Beaverton start-up has created a floating "lily pad" that uses solar-activated nanotechnology to break down water contaminants.

Puralytics CEO Mark Owen said the device could treat storm water pollution before it reaches nearby waterways if it were deployed in retention ponds or ditches alongside roads and parking lots.

A $53,000 Commercialization Grant from Oregon BEST is enabling Beaverton, Ore.-based Puralytics to work with faculty and students affiliated with Oregon State University's Institute for Water & Watersheds to evaluate the company's new solar-activated water treatment system. The technology could reduce overflow situations at municipal treatment facilities during heavy storms.

The OSU research team, led by Oregon BEST researcher Todd Jarvis, will establish key design parameters and generate third-party test data using artificial ponds or tanks, where prototypes will be monitored and tested.
