WATER COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • ·         Upcoming Water Seminars by Gaylon Campbell and Steve Garrity

IWW would love to invite the water community to attend some exceptional upcoming seminars here at OSU! Please come by and enjoy/learn this special set of seminars put on by Decagon Devices:  Monday May 6, 3:30- 5:00 PM  ALS 3005.  Gaylon Campbell is a global leader in environmental measurement technology, and Steve Garrity is developing the tools you will soon be using to understand our plant communities.  They will bring toys!

1.)  Should Hydrologists Measure Electrical Conductivity?

Presented by: Gaylon Campbell

Salt can be a useful tracer for water movement, but direct measurement of salt concentrations can be difficult and expensive.  It is often possible, though, to infer salt concentration from electrical conductivity (EC) measurements.  We will talk about how EC measurements are made, how one determines the amount of salt in soil from bulk EC measurements, and give some examples of tracking fertilizer and estimating deep drainage.

2.)   Using Radiometers to Monitor Forest Phenology

Presented by: Steve Garrity

Monitoring the timing of recurring forest canopy phenological events is critical for understanding spatiotemporal variation in ecosystem-atmosphere fluxes of mass and energy. Many of the techniques that exist for estimating forest phenological events rely on measurements of canopy-light interactions. Spectral radiometers, in particular, may be useful for monitoring canopy phenology at a range of spatial scales and may help shed light on phenological processes that are otherwise hidden from view.

  • OSU Mediators Beyond Borders (MBB) Panel Presentation and Luncheon

Mediators Beyond Borders (MBB) – Oregon State University chapter is hosting a panel presentation and networking luncheon, May 24th from 9:30am-2:00pm in the MU Journey Room. The theme of this first Mediation Day is "Managing Conflict in a Changing World: Lessons from Oregon and Beyond." Thanks to generous funding from the Educational Activities Committee, we can provide free registration (including delicious free food) to the first 60 registrants.   As such, please spread the word quickly and register here ASAP if you plan to attend!  Then, check out our MBB-OSU Facebook Page for updates and panelist bios.  If you have any questions, please email MBB-OSU President Miriah Russo Kelly at mediators@oregonstate.edu.

  • Geography Day Presentations and Poster Session

Geography Day is coming up fast and we would like to invite the water community to attend on May 10th from 9am to 4pm in Burt 193! Come hear presentations about the latest research occurring in the CEOAS geography graduate program. Only have a short break? Not a problem, come by when you’re available to support your colleagues. Presentations will be on the half hour with a poster presentation from 12:30pm to 1pm; attached is a flyer with the schedule and presentation titles. Snacks and drinks will be provided. We hope to see you all there!
