 OSU WATER IN THE NEWS

  • University Instructors Study Disaster’s Economic Effects (The Daily Astorian)

Oregon State University researchers are studying the relationships between and impacts of Clatsop County's economic sectors as part of an effort to create an input-output model to predict the economic impact of a tsunami in and outside inundation zones.

Corcoran, rural economics professor Bruce Weber, assistant professor Yong Chen, coastal and ocean engineering professor Daniel Cox and two graduate students are about six months into the two-year project, which involves collecting engineering and economic data, then combining it all into an input-output model to gauge the impact of a tsunami on all sectors of the economy in and outside the inundation zone.

Being developed separately from the engineering side is the economic analysis, headed by Chen and Weber. Chen, whose studies focus on regional planning and land use, is using third-party software to map all businesses and their average sales in Clatsop County, while also identifying which sectors take up what portion of the county’s overall economy.
