WATER COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

  • Tribute to Jim Sedell at Monday Morning Meeting on December 10th in ALS 4001

The Stream Team at OSU will dedicate the last Monday Morning Meeting seminar of fall term to a tribute to Jim Sedell and his influence on aquatic ecology.  The tribute will be located in Room 4001 in the Agriculture Life Sciences Building on the OSU campus from 9:00 - 11:00 AM on Monday, December 10th. The first hour will include a brief series of presentations, which will be followed by memories and thoughts from audience members.

Please join us for this tribute to our good friend and mentor.

OSU WATER IN THE NEWS

  • Congratulations Hydrophiles

OSU Hydrophiles named AWRA Outstanding Student Chapter for 2012!

  • No Wars for Water: Why Climate Change Has Not Led to Conflict (Foreign Affairs)

The world economic downturn and upheaval in the Arab world might grab headlines, but another big problem looms: environmental change. Along with extreme weather patterns, rising sea levels, and other natural hazards, global warming disrupts freshwater resource availability -- with immense social and political implications.

The policy community has long prophesized about the coming water wars. However, the authors in this article argue that we should not expect them anytime soon.  More likely, the authors argue that tensions over access will merely exacerbate existing regional conflicts.  Authors Lucia De Stefano and K. Stahl are previous postdoctoral researchers at OSU while Aaron T. Wolf is a professor of geography in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Atmospheric Sciences (CEOAS) at OSU.
