WATER COMMUNITY ANNOUNCEMENTS

·         Thank you to all participants in the Columbia River Treaty Review process

U.S. Entity staff members extend big thanks to each stakeholder who participated in the recent public discussions on the Draft Regional Recommendation of Columbia River Treaty Review process.  In total, over 300 people attended the meetings in Spokane, Boise, Helena, Olympia and Portland during September and October.  Many in the OSU water community invested significant time and effort to attend one or more of the meetings.  Staff members truly appreciate each participant’s contributions to the ongoing regional conversation about the Treaty’s future.

The public comment period on the Draft Regional Recommendation remains open through this Friday, Oct. 25.  The Entity has received about 20 comments to date, and they want to insure that everyone who wants to make comments has the chance to do so.  Your ideas and feedback are important, so please submit your comments to this website:  http://www.bpa.gov/applications/publiccomments/OpenCommentListing.aspx .

You can also see comments submitted to date on this website.  Entity staff will compile and post all comments and a summary of the meetings mentioned above in early November.  Please check back at http://www.crt2014-2024review.gov/CurrentMeetingMaterials.aspx .

Under the Canadian / BC Hydro Info section on our website, you can find links to Canadian websites about the current Canadian review process, including their recently released draft recommendation.  For more information, go to:  http://blog.gov.bc.ca/columbiarivertreaty/.

Thank you again to all of those who participated in the Columbia River Treaty Review process!

OSU WATER IN THE NEWS

‘Perfect storm’ of factors blamed for colony collapse (Capital Press: The West’s Ag Website)

AURORA, Ore. — An Oregon State University bee expert said that it is wrong to blame colony collapse disorder on neonicotinoid insecticides.  Ramesh Sagili, an assistant professor in the Department of Horticulture at OSU, said that exposure to neonicotinoids and other pesticides is just one of many factors contributing to the recent decline in bee populations Growers can help limit bee losses to pesticides by choosing insecticides with low toxicity to bees, avoiding spraying plants during bloom, and protecting water sources from pesticide contamination, Sagili said.
